BRAVE Success Story: Sedgate Variety, Edo State

Sector: Textile and Garment

Sedgate Clothing and Fashion Design house located in Benin City, Edo state has been in business for over 5 years now and it is managed by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Mrs. Anna Liawola, who is very passionate about the fashion and design industry and have since turned this passion into a business.

Although the passion for the business is one thing, executing and running the business on the other hand came with its own challenges. For Mrs. Anna Liawola, some of the challenges that she encountered in her business were the lack of funds to upgrade and also venture into new activities, mainly, sales of fabrics, making of ready-to-wear clothes for walk-in clients hoping to purchase outfits, and targeting the online market on social media. Other challenges faced were the lack of modern sewing machines to enable the business meet up with the moving trends in the industry, small space and working environment just to mention a few.

With the help of @bravewomenng, Mrs. Anna Liawola was able to learn some things about business management and operations through the business clinics organized by the @bravewomenng team. She was able to access a grant through the @bravewomenng matching grant system and with this grant, she is able to boost the business by acquiring new items such as new and modern sowing machines, and air conditioners for the bigger workspace. She was also able to procure many more items for the business.

With the bigger space and new machines, the staff strength has increased from four (4) to ten (10). The business was able to carefully select the additional (6) team members drawing on the knowledge and skills gained from a business clinic organized by the Project on human resource management. The business is also doing well financially, as it now generates double the income it used to prior to receiving grant-matching support from BRAVE. Mrs. Laiwola also mentioned that the training she got from the business clinics organized has helped her in other ways too. Bookkeeping which used to be a challenge is now a thing of the past and she understands it more now and today she can manage to keep good records in her business now.
